Number Pad For Macbook Pro

Reader Timothy Barrett has a new MacBook Pro and old habits. He writes:

Elegant & Perfect for Streamlining Numeric Data Input The NewerTech Keypad is perfect for finance professionals, including accountants and analysts, as well as students. It enhances number typing speed by 2.3x and launches apps +31% faster than your original MacBook. (Photos are shot with the actual products.) With the sleek design, Nums™ does NOT affect your everyday use of your trackpad.

I recently upgraded from an old 15-inch MacBook Pro to a new unibody MacBook Pro. I love my new laptop but miss being able to press the Fn key and use the J, K, L, U, I, O, 7, 8, 9 keys for a number pad as I could with my old laptop. Is there any way to make that work with new Apple laptops?

There is. Download a copy of Takayama Fumihiko’s free KeyRemap4MacBook. This is a PreferencePane that lets you remap the Mac’s keyboard in interesting ways.

In order to bring the MacBook’s number pad functions back from the dead you need do nothing more than install KeyRemap4MacBook and restart your Mac. If you’re running Snow Leopard you don’t have to remap anything or even open the Preference Pane. Just hold down Fn plus the letters you mentioned and your laptop will cheerfully produce numbers as did your old one.

If you’re running Leopard you must open KeyRemap4MacBook in System Preferences, flip down the triangle next to Remap Fn Key, and enable the Fn to Fn (with NumLock) option. Your Leopard-running laptop will now have a functional number pad.

Updated with Leopard information.

Hardware :: Apple Wireless Keyboard Not Working On Windows Vista 64 Bit?

Mar 30, 2009

my Apple wireless keyboard works fine in OS X Leopard but when I load up Windows Vista my Keyboard does not work. The mouse wasn't work for awhile either but I managed to pair it and now it works except for the keyboard. I can't get the keyboard to work under Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I've gone into blue tooth settings and added the keyboard, hit properties, installed the drivers but it still won't work. I'm out of options and ready to just purchase a wired keyboard.

MacBook Pro :: Number Keys On Keyboard Not Working?

Sep 5, 2014

I have a macbook pro late 2011. Yesterday, I was using as usual my macbook the whole day. So I went to bed and shut the system down usually. Is ableton live 9 64 bit. Today I've started the OSX up and the number keys on the keyboard were not working anymore.. The weird thing is that the whole keyboard is currently working except the keys from 1-9 (even the Zero key is working as usual) and I have to use the virtual keyboard to type them..

Hardware :: Keys On The Apple Keyboard With The Number Pad?

Hardware :: Number Pad Not Working On Aluminum Wired Keyboard?

ForMay 1, 2009

My number pad hasn't been working lately. It looks like some kind of setting has taken effect and I'm not sure how to fix it. For example, my numbers are now directional movements for my cursor: 2 moves it down, 4 moves it left, 6 moves it right, 8 moves it up, and 1, 3, 7, and 9 move my cursor diagonally. My Logitech MX Laser mouse works fine but somehow clicking gets disabled. I have a feeling these problems are related somewhere.

MacBook Pro :: Apple Wired Keyboard - Differences Between One With And Without Number Pad

Sep 1, 2009

I want to get the apple wired keyboard (not the wireless), but I'm undecided on which version. Is the shorter wired version a lot more cramped than the longer one, in respect to the majorily used keys, or is the spacing the same between the characters for both keyboards. I never use a num pad normally and would like to free up a little space on my desk, but I'm worried that the rest of the keys will be more cramped and uncomfortable to type on.

Windows On Mac :: How To Get Keyboard Number Pad To Work With Fusion

Sep 10, 2008

I'm using Fusion with my Boot Camp partition on my MacBook. I've got an external keyboard (Matias OSX Keyboard). My number pad doesn't work in Windows but does in OS X. I'm not sure if there is a num lock key or how to access it if that would make the difference.

MacBook Pro :: Number Keys On Keyboard Are Malfunctioning Besides Number 0

Sep 2, 2014

-OSx
-Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
-Memory 4GB
Only the number keys on my keyboard are malfunctioning besides the number 0. For example when I press 1 it appears as q1. When I press 2 it appears as w2.
I am not sure if I accidentally pressed something on my keyboard that has changed the functioning of my number keys. I've tried fidgeting with the keyboard settings in System Preferences and holding down the f6 key but nothing has worked.

Windows On Mac :: Apple ALum Wireless Keyboard Windows XP Drivers?

Jul 2, 2009

Having problems with the Audio, Brightness and eject button keys after windows xp automatic update. Buttons sometimes work after a shutdown and restart, sometimes not. Tried the Bootcamp 2.1 reinstall but didnt help much. Where the heck can i get drivers for the bloody thing?
Apologies for the lingo but im quite frustrated. it takes apple yrs to fix one problem but only for another to appear.
I already gave up on Realtek doing something about their crappy sound quality (despite releasing a new driver every two weeks) and the mighty mouse freezing after hibernation unless u press the left button like a man possesed!!

Hardware :: White Apple Keyboard Not Working?

Oct 22, 2010

For some reason, my old white Apple USB keyboard does not work as expected when plugged into my MacBook Pro (15', Mid-2010)
The keys themselves work fine, but the volume and eject keys do nothing. Also, in iTunes, when I tried to rename a playlist, whenever I'd hit the apostrophe key (') iTunes would select a different playlist or device instead of typing out the character.
Is there a way to make the keyboard work properly?

Also, every time I start iTunes, it gives some weird error about Adobe Flash player. I'm not at home now so I don't have the exact wording of the error with me, sorry..

Windows On Mac :: Boot Into Windows 7 RC From OSX W/ Apple Wireless Keyboard?

May 6, 2009

As far as I understand there is a bug that stops Windows 7 or Vista from showing up in the Start Up disk options in the preference settings.
So the only option is to go through the boot menu selection but unfortunately I am using the Apple wireless keyboard and holding the option key down doesn't bring up the boot selection screen. Is there anything I can do .. or am I forced to use a USB keyboard for now ?
For the record I have the Wireless Keyboard and Mighty mouse paired and working in Windows 7 ( The keyboard has occasional lag from the first keystroke input but is fine from then ) Its just that I get no response from keystrokes during boot up.

Hardware :: Apple Wireless Keyboard Not Working As Intended?

So for Christmas I received an Apple wireless keyboard to use with my macbook. All the regular keys are working just fine, but there is something wrong with the function keys. For example, the expos dashboard and brightness keys just dont work, and when I press the key with the fast forward picture on it, it goes into expos mode. Not even the sound buttons are working they are used as dashboard and clear desktop.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: F1 And F2 Stopped Working With 10.7.4 On Apple Wireless Keyboard?

May 21, 2012

I have an Apple wireless keyboard and the F1 and F2 keys don't work. I am connecting to a early 2010 Mac mini and running OS X 10.7.4. Seemed like it quit working when I updated to 10.7.4. I've reset my SMC and PRAM twice. Is this a 10.7.4 bug? Any fixes?

Intel Mac :: Volume Keys Not Working On Apple 10-key Keyboard?

Jun 1, 2012

After the cat spilled a glass of water on my wireless keyboard I had to get a new one. I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was. When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard). I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them.

Hardware :: Apple Wireless Keyboard Function Buttons Not Working

Jan 2, 2011

I have an Apple Wireless Keyboards and have noticed a problem with it. So the wireless keyboard has the EXACT same layout as my MacBook keyboard, so I would assume it should function the same. You know how along the top there are lots of function buttons? Well none of those work like they should. Clicking any of the buttons from esc (very left) to the play/pause button doesn't do anything. From there, the forward button (>>) does what F3 should, the volume off button does something I'm not quite sure what it is the volume down button pushes everything off to the side of the screen (not sure what it's called ) and volume up opens my dashboard. So is this something completely wrong with my keyboard, or is it something weird that they all do that I don't know of?

Hardware :: Apple Wireless Keyboard Randomly Stops Working?

Jan 3, 2009

My Apple Wireless Keyboard is haunted. It will randomly, in the middle of sentences, or sometimes after I haven't used in a few minutes, stop responding.
The really weird part? I open System Prefs, click Bluetooth, and viola! It works again. I don't have to do anything - just open the Bluetooth prefs. As soon as I do, everything I've typed since it went dead (usually just a word or two) is actually output into the search box in Systems Prefs.
There is no rhyme or reason to this weirdness. Sometimes it will literally happen a few times an hour for days (which drives me up the wall); sometimes it'll go months without doing it. When it's doing it a lot, no amount of rebooting/relogging-in fixes it. One thing I have not tried is using a fresh user account (or Guest), because it's so unpredictable.. even on my own account it will take a break and work normally for a few hours, then go right back to freaking out.
The fact that it stores everything I type when it's 'not working' is the really weird part. It's like the OS is receiving the data but just forgetting to process it until I poke it and remind it, 'you have stuff coming in via Bluetooth, wake up and do something with it!'
